“Our kids were in awe of being on a stage performing live at the hotel. Our beaming parents were more than pleased to take the time to get their child out to the performance. Congratulations and thank you for the opportunity.”

Donna Bekkers-Boyd, Principal, Bayshore Catholic School 2009

Connecting Artists, Students, and Community during the Annual OCFF Conference

Art Beat is an intimate, interactive, and organic opportunity for artists to share their talents with students, elders, and patients in the OCFF conference's host community each year. This program is a voluntary service and no fee is charged to any of the schools or organizations that are chosen to host a workshop or concert.

Folk music is ultimately about expression, reflection, creativity and community, and what better way to embrace the roots of Folk music during the OCFF conference than to share an hour of  time with students and local residents who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to hear, learn, discover, and connect with our community.

Students, teachers, administrators, social workers, and musicians alike have been delighted with the programs offered during conferences in Sudbury, Guelph, Kingston, London and Ottawa. One high school student's parting comment at the end of a workshop was, "That was the best history class I've ever had," while a teacher at another school said: "You don't understand, we have no music program, and that was the first time some of those kids have seen a guitar or heard a song sung in this building."

Art Beat artists offered sessions with topics ranging from graphic design to belly-dancing, and from traditional storytelling to guitar techniques and songwriting styles. The common connection is folk music in its many forms.

IFCO

Extended Art Beat is a collaborative venture between the OCFF and another arts organization, to present a week-long intensive program to a class of Grade 6 students in the conference host city.  In the past the OCFF has collaborated with the Independent Filmmakers Cooperative of Ottawa (IFCO) to deliver the Extended Art Beat program in ‘Beacon’ schools (a term the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board uses to describe 25 high-needs elementary schools in the city). The program is intended to give the children an opportunity to experience music and

art in a hands-on collaborative project from conception to delivery. In 2008 and 2009, under the instruction of Pixie Cram (filmmaker) and Brian Sanderson (musician) the participating Grade 6 classes produced video and live music performances, both of which were showcased at the conference Gala Dinner.

The OCFF is dedicated to providing meaningful outreach and education experiences as a way to connect with the broader community. Both the Art Beat and Extended Art Beat programs offer an opportunity to foster interest and appreciation and raise the profile of the creative disciplines at a grass roots level. Such programs are increasingly important in an era when schools, long term health and seniors facilities have dwindling budgets for exposing their students/clients to the arts.

If you have ideas to contribute please contact Chris MacLean, the OCFF’s Community Outreach Manager.
